Our famous high-strength floating shelf bracket with the back-side post. Used on many hundreds of projects all over the world, folks always comment on how robust these are.

So, there are a lot of options for brackets out there – some cheaper, some more expensive, some made here, some offshore. Some better, some less so. I make what I feel is my best entry into the market, and I’ll put them up against anyone else’s for quality. I come at this from a machinist angle – everything I make is to the specification I set out. I don’t let anything go that isn’t right, and I make each and every one of them myself, to order. Feel free to ask any questions you’d like, I’m always happy to give a hand – if you don’t choose one of my designs, ultimately, its ok – I’d like everyone to find the solution correct for them, and, I’m willing to admit that isn’t always my product.

Perfect for those who have the perfect shelf material already, and don’t want to use traditional brackets.

Simply recess the back side of the floating shelf for the bracket, and drill a 1/2″ hole with a commonly available drill bit, bolt the brackets up and slide the wood shelf on. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy.

As shown in the photos, the basic install process is easy: choose your post length (1/2 of the depth of your shelf, rounded up, plus 10- 20%, also rounded up. For example a 10″ shelf: 1/2 of 10 = 5″. 10-20% of 10 = 1-2″ you’d need a 6-7 inch bracket. Then choose the back side post length: either 2″ or 3-1/2″. Use the shorter one for installation onto 2×4 reinforced stud walls (2×4 blocking installed between atuds, with the wide wide oriented vertically) or the 3-1/4″ variation for regular 2×4 or larger stud walls.

Carefully measure the install locations, drill 1/2″ holes into the studs and place your brackets with good quality screws. Then, carefully measure the post locations, and transfer the measurement to your shelf. Drill the shelf to suit using a 1/2″ bit, and ream the hole to get a good fit onto the brackets. Install and done. In higher traffic installs (kitchen shelves for example) install a toe screw on both ends of the floating shelf tieing it to the wall securely if pulled on.

These are tested to failure, and I would say they have a comfortable working load of 100lbs per pair if installed correctly. As these are a DIY product, no warranty can be offered, the load limit of your installation is highly dependent on your install.

Install one per stud, or every 16″ onto blocking. Use quality screws to fasten brackets. A tight fit into the backing (stud or blocking) is needed for correct function, loose holes have reduced weight capacity and will also allow for deflection.

Not for use in steel studs. If you are not sure, consult a professional for installation assistance.

They are more expensive than the regular style due to the more intensive machining/welding process. If you don’t need the extra strength, I’d recommend you just use the regular ones.
